Database Architectures Transcription

Welcome to our Database Architectures Module. Relational database management system, or DBMS, is a suite of software that maintains and provides controlled access to records. Some examples are Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, MySQL, Cloud, and so on. Data and relations are stored in a series of tables. Rows in these tables are known as tuples.

And columns are known as attributes. For the CISSP examination, you should remember that a row is a tuple and a column is an attribute. The database administrator or DBA can setup, manage, and monitor the daily operation of the database. The DBA is responsible for the function of the database and the overall security of the system.

Most relational databases use Structured Query Language, or SQL, for interacting with the database. A database is basically a cross-referenced collection of data. There are some legacy models out there that are no longer being commonly used. Hierarchical databases, for example, presented data in a logical tree structure. Network databases were complex interrelated tree structures that were used with LDAP and DNS to define resource trees.

With object oriented databases data is encapsulated and this allows then to handle a large variety of data such as audio, images, video and documents. Methods, which are a way of representing the data, are stored with the data. Distributed databases are physically distributed across multiple systems. A distributed database refers to multiple databases that are situated at different locations and are logically connected.

In the distributed database model, the transition from one database to anther is transparent to the users. There is a front end system that the user is able to access. And they do not have access to the back end system, so they do not have any idea where the data is actually being stored.

For the CISSP examination, you should remember that a distributed database resides in multiple locations and these locations are all connected to each other so the location of the data is transparent to the user. Object orientated databases store objects rather than data such as integers, strings, or real numbers.

Objects are also used in object orientated programming languages, such as Smalltalk, C++, and Java. Objects can contain both executable code and data. Objects consist of attributes which are data defining the characteristics of an object, and this data might be simple, such as integers, numbers, strings, or a reference to a complex object.

Methods, which were previously known as procedures or functions, define the behavior of an object in the database. This concludes our Database Architectures Module. Thank you for watching.
